Char's life begins as Casval Rem Deikun, the elder son of Zeon Zum Deikun. Following his father's suspected assassination by Degwin Sodo Zabi, Casval and his sister Artesia are taken in by Jimba Ral. After Ral is killed protecting them, they flee to Earth, where they are taken in by Don Teabolo Mass and renamed Edward and Sayla. On Earth, Casval meets a boy named Char Aznable who looks nearly identical to him, also with blue eyes. When Kycilia Zabi orders Casval's death, the boys swap clothes; Casval assumes the name Char Aznable and enters the Zeon Military Academy wearing sunglasses to hide his identity. He excels in training, befriends Garma Zabi, and incites a student uprising that leads to his expulsion. Returning to Side 3, he joins the mobile suit assault forces under Admiral Dozle Zabi. His superior skills at the Battle of Loum, where he single-handedly destroys five Federation Magellan-class battleships with his red-painted Zaku, earn him the nickname "The Red Comet" and a promotion to Lieutenant Commander.

In Their Own Story

During the One Year War, Char discovers the White Base in Side 7 and reunites with his sister, Sayla. He faces Amuro Ray for the first time; although he overwhelms the inexperienced pilot, the RX-78-2 Gundam's armor repels his attacks. Char pursues the White Base across space, infiltrating Luna II to sabotage it, but fails repeatedly. In a surprise attack during the White Base's atmospheric entry, he succeeds in bringing the ship into Zeon-controlled territory led by Garma Zabi. Secretly plotting revenge against the Zabi family, Char lures Garma and his fleet into the firing range of the White Base, resulting in Garma's death and Char's dismissal from the Space Strike Force. He later joins Kycilia Zabi's Assault Cavalry and forms a Newtype bond with Lalah Sune. When Lalah is killed by Amuro while taking a blow meant for Char, a bitter hatred cements between the two pilots. In the Battle of A Baoa Qu, after losing their mobile suits, Char and Amuro engage in a gunfight followed by a sword duel.
